About Us

Our Mission

Volunteer Emory's mission is to provide the Emory community with service opportunities that promote learning about self and society, while striving to meet the needs identified by community organizations.

Our History

In 1980, two Emory students, Debbie Genzer and Wendy Rosenberg (pictured in photo, left), had a vision of creating a centralized vehicle through which Emory students could serve the community. The result of their efforts was Volunteer Emory. Today, Volunteer Emory is a student-run department within the Division of Campus Life.

Melody Porter

Director
I became the director of Volunteer Emory in Summer 2005 and am thrilled to be working with students and community service! I graduated from Emory in 1995 with a double major in Religion and Political Science, and received my Master of Divinity from Candler in 2001. I've spent time as a long-term volunteer working with job development in Philadelphia and preschool children in Johannesburg, South Africa. I work for community change because we are all connected and interdependent, and we all benefit when justice and compassion are brought into the world. I also love cheese fries.
