Leadership Opportunities

Our Staff
Volunteer Emory student Staff Members each lead a weekly service trip, and organize special events and awareness campaigns. They are chosen in a highly selective process each spring, and volunteer their time while gaining leadership skills and a community of support for their efforts to make change.

Two student Co-Directors, who are hired each spring, lead the Staff. The Co-Directors set the vision and provide guidance for the staff, each committing ten hours a week to Volunteer Emory. They are paid a stipend for their work.

A full-time Director supervises the program and trains the staff.

Leadership Opportunities

We recruit new staff, hiring 15-20 Staff Members and 2 Co-Directors, every spring. Applications are available in February each year. Being a part of Volunteer Emory’s staff is a great way to strengthen your leadership skills and to learn more about nonprofit work and issues of justice.

Being a part of Volunteer Emory staff gives you the opportunity to delve into a particular issue that affects our world - from arts and cultural expression to immigrants and refugees; human rights to children, youth and education. Staff members plan a special event or two related to their issue area, contact agencies in the Atlanta are that address their issue, make contact with faculty that have expertise in their area, and organize a weekly service trip to address their issue. When the year is over, you'll be an expert on the causes, effects and ways to address the particularities of your issue area.

You'll also gain leadership experience, learning skills such as event planning, how to run effective meetings, working in partnership with community agencies, and motivating volunteers. Such experience translates well into all kinds of professions - Volunteer Emory staff go on to run non-profits, research, practice medicine and advocate for social change.

Most staff volunteer about six to eight hours per week for Volunteer Emory. Two hours of office work are required (meeting potential new volunteers, working on special events, and organizing our resource center); in addition to leading a weekly or bi-weekly service trip. Staff meetings, also required, are on Monday evenings and usually last less than an hour. Occasional special events and group meetings are also required.
